Amsler Grid Test

The Amsler Grid can help to detect the kinds of vision changes that affect central vision — the vision used for reading and other detail work. If you are using the Amsler Grid to monitor an existing eye condition such as macular degeneration, we recommend that you make it a routine once-a-day activity.

Follow the steps below. Remember, using the Amsler Grid is not a substitute for getting regular eye exams.

  1. Display the Amsler Grid in a new window. Print the grid so you can hold the test in your hand, or do the test on the screen.
  2. Test each eye separately.
  3. Do the test in an evenly lit room while wearing the glasses you use for reading.
  4. The Amsler Grid test should be performed at a comfortable reading distance away from your open eye, usually about 12-14 inches. If you are doing the test on the computer, sit/stand about 12-14 inches away from the screen, making sure the screen is at eye level.
  5. Cover one eye completely.
  6. With your open eye, look at the dot at the center of the Amsler Grid.
  7. Keep looking at the dot with one eye and answer the following questions. Then repeat the test with your other eye. You can record your answers on the chart, below.
